“Hmm. How obscure an agency, will I have ever heard of it?”

“Very obscure, I would be surprised if you had, Department of Overseas Analysis, amusingly acronymic, and headed by Lord Chalford.”

“Central Government then?”

“Yes I suppose you could say that.”

“Okay, I see, do you work out of Cheltenham?”

“I have been to those offices a few times for meetings, but then meetings are held all over the place. It depends who needs to be at the meeting as to where it is held.”

“Morning Sir.”

“Morning Edward. So. What’s all this fuss that has been going on over the weekend? I do not recall authorising overtime for you on Saturday, and why are the local constabulary making enquiries about you?”

Edward sighed inwardly; it would never do to sigh in front of the Colonel; and began to unfold the sequence of events, his assumptions and actions and ultimately, his plans as he foresaw them concerning Geraldine for the rest of the week

“It doesn’t add up Edward.”

“I tend to disagree Sir, I think it does. I think that this is nothing more than it seems. Her pedigree is faultless, the KPD has traced her back and we have a fully verified history. The likelihood of her having been compromised is exceedingly slight.”

“And therefore what, Edward, does this ‘seem’ to be?”

Edward, so gifted with words and at the toss of a hat able to converse with heads of state, found himself stumbling for words. He just grinned in a stupid way and looked at the Colonel.

“Well Edward?”

“Well, it’s a date sir.”
